First Things First – Neuter & Spay !
The subject of Neuter & Spay comes even before Adopting a new dog! Because you absolutely must do it – so you have to plan for it. Some places it can be as low as $40 but in my area, $100 for boys and $125 for girls is more common.
Many Shelters will charge “to adopt” a dog – but will reimburse you a lot of the amount once you Neuter/Spay and show them the documentation.
There are lots of resources that help keep the cost lower; Do a Local Search on line and see what you can find. Here is a good start: Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Programs | ASPCA.

DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO NEUTER OR SPAY? OK! ADOPT A SHELTER DOG WHO ALREADY IS! THERE ARE THOUSANDS! MY dear little Cricket, pictured, came from a High-Kill West Virginia County Shelter/Pound. “High-Kill” means that they have a high rate of killing dogs, usually because they don’t have space for very many. The Shelter Cricket was in can house 16 dogs at a time… whenever there are 17 dogs, someone is going to be killed, unless someone is adopted to open-up a space. I got up at O’Dark Thirty to take her to be spayed, shortly after adopting her. I dropped-her off with the Vet but later got a call… she was already Spayed ! YAY !! I had checked well for a scar on her belly and saw nothing. The Vet said he did not see it either, until he shaved her. What a clever girl! (would have been even more clever to TELL MOMMY ! ) All’s well that ends well!
