Articles covering thrifty and smart ways to live with Dogs
Lucky me! I gave four dog baths this morning and, as usual, was pleased to see zero fleas. Bath time is a good time to examine your doggies for bumps, lumps, scraps, scratches, rashes… and Fleas! Look carefully at the water; fleas don’t want to drown and will usually “abandon ship” and jump off the dog.
We’re all about Adopting Rescued Shelter Dogs and sometimes, you’re “welcoming” more than just the Dog into your home ):
It’s Spring! It really, really is. So what do I do? I open all the doors and windows and let the Spring come in! It’s Glorious!
In an hour or two, I realize that house flies have come it too.
Yes, I do go through this every year.
No, I don’t learn.
Yes, I probably will keep doing it on wonderful days (but I did put the screens back in the windows, however I do not have screen doors… working on that. )

ANOTHER IDEA FOR HOW TO SURVIVE IT WITHOUT GOING POSTAL!
AUTO DEFENSE SYSTEM – CARGO LINERS
I drive an SUV, I suppose lots of Dog People do too. I always have the Back Seats folded down, so there’s a big Dog area from right behind my seat all the way back to the tail gate. I can’t find “Cargo Liners” that long;
I only find them for when the back seats are in People position. Even if I did find what I want, it would be over $200, because the short ones are about $100, like this one from Weathertech. Looks great, but notice it extends only to behind the back seats; I always have the back seats folded flat for twice the Cargo (Dog) Space. Read more…
My Lovely Lassie, Lyrical. Rescued by some Wonderful Women who pull as many dogs as they can from a high-kill “shelter” in Mineral County Wv – and Adopted by me several years ago. She’s a real Drama Queen!
Ahhhh…. such a Glorious thing…. the snows slowly melt, the ice recedes, the Earth warms, the Robins return. It’s the Time of Year that I like to call . . . . .
And it’s enough to make a Dog Parent want to blow their brains out! Me and Mine live on Three Dog-Proof-Fenced Acres of Woods and lots of it is MUD right now. When we’re lacking Mud – “certain dogs” (ahem! Miss Angel) like to make their own by SITTING!!! in the Gold Fish pond and then tromping in the dirt.
So what do I do? Preemptive Measures! I do not hope for the best…. I KNOW what’s coming. And I do what I can to make my Home, Floors, Car and Furniture Dog-Proof…ish! Read more…
I’m a Borderline Germaphobe… with nine dogs! That means I do a LOT of cleaning. And, to me, we’re not talking “clean” unless we’re using Bleach. Apparently, Shelters agree with me; I know Bleach is usually on their list of things they need donated. I use it for mop water, put it in spray bottles for surfaces, use in the Dog Laundry… and basically on anything else in the house that doesn’t run away!
Keep your dogs in or out of certain parts of your home with ATTRACTIVE Dog Gates. And, really, MAKE THEM YOURSELF – it’s not hard. I assume you have a power drill (life isn’t really worth living without one and you don’t have to go overboard. There’s a $29 18 volt Craftsman that will do just fine for most everything )
We’re advised to replace our Bed Pillows quite often – and then do what with the old ones? Plump-up the Land Fill? I’ve made the switch to just buying cheap ones (yes, at the Dollar Store – get over it!) so I’m ok with getting fresh ones often. In my house, the old pillows become Dog Cushies ( and do not go to the Land Fill).
I like to grab a few Pillow Shams at another Cheapo Fav. – the Good Will or Consignment Stores (SO great for Dog Stuff) Shams are usually 1 to 3 dollars at mine. Put the two together, and I have a lovely, washable Dog Cushy. If they do something really disgusting on it – I don’t mind then chucking it. Also, Dog Beds sometimes need replacement stuffing. Cut open your X-Bed Pillows and re-purpose.
